About the session
This session is part of Aan’s Adolescent Health and Wellbeing Initiative (AHWI) — a program designed to empower trainers and frontline facilitators to address key areas of adolescent health, including menstrual hygiene, anaemia prevention, nutrition, and emotional wellbeing.
While in-person sessions are always more impactful and help retain participants’ attention more effectively, this virtual TOT will provide a structured, interactive, and practical learning experience for your team.
Module
Hour 1
Understanding the What and Why
Building foundational knowledge and addressing stigma through the AHWI lens
Introduction and Icebreaker
Establish a safe, judgment-free space; understand participants’ current knowledge, comfort levels, and perceptions about menstruation.
Understanding Menstruation & the Body
Explain the menstrual cycle and anatomy accurately while addressing common myths and misconceptions.
Anaemia & Nutrition
Explore the link between menstruation, iron deficiency, and nutrition; discuss locally available iron-rich foods and simple strategies to improve adolescent girls’ health.
Why MHM Matters
Discuss the physical, emotional, and social implications of poor menstrual hygiene — from infections and absenteeism to the loss of confidence and opportunities.
Breaking Stigma and Taboos
Examine cultural barriers and restrictive practices; identify ways to normalize menstruation through open dialogue and inclusive community practices.
Hour 2
Learning How to Share and Facilitate
Equipping trainers to communicate with sensitivity, confidence, and clarity
Understanding Period Poverty & Product Choices
Review menstrual product options (disposable, reusable, menstrual cups) and guide participants on choosing safe, context-appropriate solutions, including correct usage and safe disposal.
Facilitating Sensitive Conversations
Use participatory techniques, role-play, and storytelling to practice discussing menstruation, anaemia, and nutrition with adolescents, boys, parents, and community groups.
Using the AHWI Toolkit
Introduce the AHWI visual aids, presentations, and adaptable session plans designed for community use. Trainers will learn how to modify these tools based on audience age, gender, and context.
Action Planning & Q&A
Reflect on key learnings, discuss barriers faced in field contexts, and outline next steps for participants to implement MHM and AHWI components effectively in their community work.
The AHWI MHM ToT is designed as a behaviour-change and facilitation-focused intervention, not just a knowledge session.
